Our Wind Energy Unit

The Centre has developed a fourteen-year wind data bank (2005-2020) using a CR10X software-based data logger system. This data bank shows wind estimate at 9 metres above the ground. The result depicts that since the performance of wind energy resources is proportional to height, a wind turbine installed at a height of about 50 meters above the ground could be used for utility scale wind energy development.

The data bank shows that given the advances in the wind energy technology, NCERD may have a number of occasions in class 3 area, which are suitable for utility scale wind energy development (electrical generation).

Weather station equipment is also installed in the centre to record wind speed and direction and other weather conditions. The research activities of this unit focus on expanding wind energy data collection, design and development of wind energy harvesting system.

Specific Activities and Programmes

  • Modeling of the Energy consumption pattern of the Nsukka metropolis.
  • Implementation of Energy Audit and Energy Management best practices in the tertiary institutions within the South East, Nigeria.
  • Acquisition of wind data (wind speed, wind direction etc.), solar radiation data (Global and Diffuse) and relative humidity data are already ongoing on the Centre’s Weather Station.
  • Planning to establish a well equipped Meteorological laboratory with computer systems.
  • Organizing workshops, conferences and seminars on wind system generation.
  • Developing models for wind energy prediction.
  • Updating Meteorological equipment for wind data acquisition.
  • Staff training, workshops and manpower development.
  • Feasibility study, installation and characterization of wind energy systems within the South East, Nigeria.
  • Strengthening and consolidating research collaborations with local and international bodies.
