About NCERD
University of Nigeria, Nsukka

Background Information

Energy demand and supply are the major indices for assessing the level of development and the standard of living in a country. The need to explore and harness other sources of energy supply apart from fossil energy sources was exposed by the world energy crises of the 1970s. Although Nigeria is among the countries with abundant fossil fuel reserves, it is not left out in the endeavour to diversify its energy resources.

There is a growing demand for energy in the domestic, commercial and industrial sectors of the economy such that relying on fossil fuel alone will not augur well for the country. The abundant solar and alternative energy sources in the country can be utilized to compliment the finite fossil fuel reserves.

The Federal government in the 1980s, established among other energy research centers, the National Centre for Energy Research and Development(NCERD) , University of Nigeria Nsukka. The research center is under the supervision of Energy Commission of Nigeria.

The center engages vigorously in diverse areas of energy research such as Solar photovoltaic, Biomass, Solar Thermal, Wind Energy, etc. The center has a large number of highly experienced and skilled researchers with many years of experience.

Director's statement

Ag. Director’s Statement, National Centre for Energy Research and Development (NCERD)

The National Centre for Energy Research and Development (NCERD) was established to serve as a leading institution in advancing energy research, innovation, and development across Nigeria and beyond. Our primary mandate is to conduct high-quality, demand-driven research aimed at addressing the nation’s energy challenges, promoting energy security, supporting sustainable development, and contributing to national economic growth.

At the heart of our mission is the pursuit of excellence in renewable energy technologies, energy efficiency, and sustainable energy systems. We are tasked with developing practical solutions through research, innovation, technology transfer, and capacity building. NCERD plays a crucial role in policy formulation support, offering expert advice to government agencies and stakeholders on critical energy issues.

Our activities span across key areas including solar energy, biomass, wind energy, hydro power, energy conservation, rural electrification, and emerging clean energy technologies. We also engage in training programs to build human capacity in the energy sector, working closely with universities, industries, and international organizations.

As the Acting Director, I am committed to upholding the vision of the Centre — to be a centre of excellence in energy research and development — and ensuring that our projects and initiatives align with national priorities and global best practices.

Through collaboration, innovation, and relentless pursuit of knowledge, the National Centre for Energy Research and Development will continue to be a vital engine driving Nigeria’s transition towards a more secure, sustainable, and prosperous energy future.
