Energy demand and supply are the major indices for assessing the level of development
and the standard of living in a country. The need to explore and harness other
sources of energy supply apart from fossil energy sources was exposed by the world energy
crises of the 1970s. Although Nigeria is among the countries with abundant fossil
fuel reserves, it is not left out in the endeavour to diversify its energy resources.
There is a growing demand for energy in the domestic, commercial and industrial
sectors of the economy such that relying on fossil fuel alone will not augur well for
the country. The abundant solar and alternative energy sources in the country can be utilized
to compliment the finite fossil fuel reserves.
The Federal government in the 1980s, established
among other energy research centers, the National Centre for Energy Research and Development(NCERD)
, University of Nigeria Nsukka. The research center is under the supervision
of Energy Commission of Nigeria.
The center engages vigorously in diverse areas
of energy research such as Solar photovoltaic, Biomass, Solar Thermal, Wind Energy, etc. The center has a large
number of highly experienced and skilled researchers with many years of experience.
