Our Biogas Unit

The process of biogas development in the centre began in 1994 when the centre sent two members of staff to China for a three-month training course in Biogas technology. This, the centre has capability in the design and fabrication of family and commercial bio-digesters.

Various capacities of bio-digesters that use animal dung, farm wastes and brewery effluents have been developed and installed. They have proved that to be very efficient in the generation of cooking gas for private and public outfits that engage in energy services. The centre has also fabricated some efficient biogas burners (stoves) and is about into the next phase of biogas technology which is on application of biogas in electricity generation and for fuelling automobiles, i.e. using biogas as alternative to petrol an diesel fuels in internal combustion engines.

Biogas slurry, a product of the biogas generation process has been used as fertilizer for growing crops.

Specific Activities and Programmes

  • Survey of different designs of family and commercial bio-digesters for degradation of various organic wastes.
  • Construction techniques for different bio-digesters.
  • Procurement of biomass/biogas research equipment.
  • Optimization of construction techniques for various bio-digesters.
  • Dissemination of biogas and bio-fuels technology in different homes, etc.
  • Planning and organizing of international workshop on biogas production and its applications.
  • Offering consultancy services to Non-Governmental Organizations, agro-based companies, breweries in such areas as degradation of agro waste for biogas generation and bioconversion of palm oil sludge for bio-fuels, etc.
  • Optimization of various Solar Thermal systems developed in the Centre.
  • Training of Scientists, Engineers, Technologists and Technicians on the application and fabrication of solar thermal devices.
  • Development and dissemination of solar thermal devices such as solar water heaters, solar dryers, solar egg incubators, solar chicken brooders, solar still, incinerators, etc.
  • Development of market-ready solar photo-catalytic reactor for portable water production.
