The Centre was established in 1980 by the Federal Government but started full operations
in 1982 with the primary legal mandate of carrying out research, development, dissemination,
training and manpower development in various areas of renewable and non-renewable energy resources
such as: Solar, Wind, Biomass, Biofuels, Fossil fuels, Hydrogen (fuel cells), Geothermal,
Energy Efficiency and Management. The Centre shall also be involved in mounting of short
courses, diploma and degree programmes in renewable energy technologies in collaboration
with relevant academic departments of the University of Nigeria, Nsukka and other institutions.

Functions of the Centre:
In pursuance of the fulfilment of the mandate, the Centre has made a significant impact in the various
research activities relevant to the mandate.
The following are the general functions of the Centre since its inception:
1. To undertake fundamental and applied research and development in all forms of renewable energy
(Solar, Biomass, Wind, Hydro, Geothermal etc.) as well as non-renewable energy such as Coal, Gas, Petroleum, etc.
2. To undertake training of Nigerians and other persons in the various areas of the Centre’s activities.
3. To provide facilities for the carrying out research and for the provision of training at all levels
in the various areas of energy technology in which the Centre is active.
4. To carry out field demonstration projects on the various energy-related devices, systems,
etc which are considered relevant to the National Energy Economy.
5. To provide prototypes of energy conversion devices and systems.
6. To carry out basic and applied research in the natural sciences, technology and social sciences,
particularly as they relate to the energy areas of activity.
7. To introduce renewable and other energy technologies into national energy mix.
8. To carry out policy studies relating to energy supply, demand and conservation.
9. To provide energy conservation device and services to the public and private organizations.
10. To develop an energy data bank
11 . To advice the government on energy policy matters.
12. To offer technical advice on various energy technologies and issues.
13. To offer consultancy services to the public and private individuals and
establishments on energy related matters.
14. To organize seminars, workshops and conferences on energy related issues.
15. To set up mini-scale manufacturing units for energy conversion devices, materials,
components and systems.
16. To carry out feasibility studies on the establishments of the energy related projects, industries, etc.
17. To develop technological and management blue prints on the production of energy related materials
components, devices and systems.
18. To assist private and public enterprises in the setting up of industries for the manufactures
of energy related materials, devices and systems.
